Description
Study of “A Man Holding a Hat” — Homage to Rembrandt
10 × 8 in | Graphite and white pencil on gray paper
This drawing is a study inspired by Rembrandt van Rijn’s A Man Holding a Hat, a work I had the opportunity to see in person during my visit to the Hammer Museum.
I created this piece as a study of composition, light, shadow, and value, carefully observing the masterful way Rembrandt builds the figure and gives it presence through contrast.
This is not intended to be an exact copy of the original work. Rembrandt’s composition remains present as the foundation and reference, while the drawing reflects my own interpretation, artistic decisions, and approach to graphite.
Working with black graphite and white pencil on gray paper allowed me to explore the relationship between light and darkness, as well as volume, form, and atmosphere within the portrait.
More than a reproduction, this piece is an artistic study and a personal homage to Rembrandt—born from the experience of seeing his work in person and from my desire to continue learning from one of the great masters of art.
